What Is Gothram (Gotra)?

Gothram (also spelled gotra) is an ancient Hindu system that traces your family lineage to one of the original saptarishis (seven sages). Every Hindu family belongs to a gothram, which is passed down through the paternal line. The best way to find your gothram is to ask your parents or grandparents — it is typically known by the eldest male members of the family. If you cannot find it through family, your family priest (purohit) may know, especially if they have conducted ceremonies for your family.
